City, Culture & Nature

Limoges

It is very enjoyable to spend a day in Limoges. Limoges is the porcelain capital of France. If you are interested, you could visit the national porcelain museum Manufacture Bernadaud. They have a beautiful, large collection of porcelain. The city also has beautiful buildings, such as medieval half-timbered houses and the Cathédrale de Saint-Etienne. The city center is very picturesque, you can have a delicious lunch on one of the nice little squares with cafes and restaurants like the Place de la Motte. Also, you may consider visiting the 19th century market hall and provide yourself with delicious local products. While in Limoges, don’t hesitate to visite the Quartier de la Boucherie. Limoges is famous for its Limousin cows.

After visiting the city, you can take a refreshing dip in the pool and enjoy the sunrays on your skin. Make sure you use enough sunscreen!

The castles route

Have you always dreamed living like a king in France? Come and follow the footsteps of the English King Richard Lionheart. In the southwest of Limoges you will find the interesting castles route of Richard Lionheart. The king lived in France for the most of his life, constantly in conflict with the other kings and rulers of the northern of France. The battles between them took place, among other places, in the Limousin, right between the North and the South of France. Here, you can find many castles built in the 11th and 12th centuries.

The castles route can take you along quiet roads which wind through the green and varied Limousin landscape. Forests and fields alternate, rolling hills take you to valleys with rivers and lakes. Along the way you pass cozy villages, where you can enjoy French delicacies.

Bellac

A trip to our neighbouring town of Bellac is well worthwhile. The history of Bellac goes back to the 10th century. The high-lying houses and atmospheric streets are nice to visit, especially in combination with the typical French market that is organised on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. You can take a walk to the Notre Dame of Bellac, dating back to the 12th century, which has the oldest reliquary in Limousin. Then continue on to the Lorette chapel, whose bell tower is 25 metres high. During the walk, the skin drier will certainly attract your attention; a relic of former tannery activities. The stagecoach path (Chemin des diligences) will take you to the banks of the Vincou, the river that flows through the village. Don’t forget to take the historical bridge “Pont de la Pierre” over the river; this is one of the oldest medieval bridges in France.
Jean Giraudoux, the writer, was born here, and his birthplace is open to the public. Cafe Le pont de la Pierre is an excellent place by the river to have a snack or drink after the walk.

Mortemart

The charming village of Mortemart, located at the foot of les Monts de Blond, is on the list of most beautiful villages in France, l’un des Plus Beaux Villages de France. The beautiful houses are built from granite and the two old monasteries and the picturesque market halls, built from wood are from the 16th century.

Montrol-Sénard

This beautiful village is definitely worth visiting. You can have lunch or dinner in one of the nice restaurants here.

Oradour-sur-Glane

Oradour-sur-Glane is a district and village in France, only half an hour away by car. The village was demolished on the 10th of June, 1944 during World War II. An impressive visit to this village recalls the horrors of that era. The village is left exactly as it was during the fatal day.

After the visit, you can relax and process what you experienced in the ghost town of Oradour-sur-Glane, in our breath-taking flower garden on the Les Lauriers residence.

Les Monts de Blond

In les Monts de Blond you can have a lovely walk. The peak of les Monts de Blond is 515 meters high. You will find numerous natural valleys and ponds. Les Monts de Blond is a granite massif west of Limoges. It is a wonderful place to visit after having your French breakfast at Les Lauriers.
